Nicolas was born in Paris, France, in 1970 and started playing the piano when he was eight years old. In 1982, 1983 and in 1984 he won honor prizes at the international piano contest Claude Khan (Concours International de Piano Claude Kahn). He attended the jazz music school Le CIM in Paris and received private tutoring from Herve Legrand for several years. His studies at the Berklee College of Music began in 1989. There he studied composition under the instruction of Greg Hopkins and Herb Pomeroy among other jazz figures and wrote often for the performances of Berklee's Big Band. While still a student and on leave in France in 1992 he was contracted by Disneyland-Paris as an arranger. In 1995 Nicolas earned third place in the first Jazz Alliance Composition Contest. He finished his studies at Berklee in May of 1996 receiving the Toshiko Akiyoshi Award the same year. In the past several years he has been working as a jazz composer, jazz arranger, and music copyist. He established his residence in Boston in September of 1998.
